Professional Staff

Our team of helpline staff are professionally qualified to work on our suicide prevention helpline.

What to expect

The helpline is a space for you to talk and get things off your chest. No judgement, no opinions, just talking.

1

Join the queue

When you contact us, you’ll be placed in a queue. Our helpline can get busy, but we will always try to get to you as quickly as possible. You might be asked some questions about yourself - these are completely anonymous and won't be seen by our team.

2

Explore while you wait

We’ve got lots of tools and resources on our site for you to read, watch and use while you wait to be connected to a team member. They can help get you into a good headspace to make the most of your conversation.

3

Speak to us

This is your space to speak about what you’re facing. We may ask you questions or help guide the conversation, but it'll be led by you. We’ll listen to what you’re going through and help you find a way forward.

4

Talk, learn, reset

Every conversation is different. We might take you through some calming exercises, help you think about your safety and deal with intense feelings, or figure out what you need for the next day and beyond.

5

CALM's here for you

After your conversation, we’ll share tools, resources and other places to get help. CALM has loads of stuff to help look after your head, look out for your friends and family, and feel better.

What's it really like

  • Helpline caller

“I stared at the number. I was terrified. Terrified of the shame I felt in asking for help, terrified of being laughed at for being weak… Instead I found someone who listened and that was all I needed at that moment: to be heard.”

  • Team member

”We understand about confidentiality and have very strict policies about it which we all know and understand.”

Other people asked

Our helpline can get very busy which unfortunately can mean a longer wait at times, but all calls will be answered if you choose to hold. We know holding can be tough, so alternatively you can come back again a little later and try again.

If it is an emergency and you don’t feel safe to wait, please call emergency services on 999 or on 111 and ask for the crisis team.

Who do I talk to out of hours?

Samaritans are open 24 hours a day on 116 123

Translation services are available to those who do not have English as a first language and would prefer to speak in their native language.  When you call, please let us know what language you would feel most comfortable speaking to us in.
